Sue Johnston gave a powerful and moving tribute to Hillsborough Campaigner Anne Williams at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards . Anne led by example in her quest for the truth about her son and others who died in the entirely preventable Hillsborough Disaster that killed 96.
For me, the Hillsborough Campaign for truth and justice stands as a powerful example how the people can triumph over adversity and expose the cover ups and corruption of political, police and press power. It would have been a long, tough and agonising road for anyone let alone bereaved families to tread. There is still a long long way to go but the light is visible at the end of what has been a long dark tunnel.
Unfortunately they are not the only part of our community that is seeking truth and justness – victims of child abuse whom I am proud to campaign with and for, gagged parents of children forcibly removed for adoption, deaths in police custody campaigners, the Orgreave miners, the poor, the disposessed, the homeless, the vulnerable, the sick, the black, the people taxed on a bedroom as big as an MP’s cloakroom, the victims of endless bank scams and stealing, the victims of the corrupt justice system run by and for the illite. This list just a sample.
The uncovering of a mass conspiracy of police lies, and police liars, is on such a scale that it has sent a shudder down the spine of even the hardened campaigners, and convulsions through the PR machines of the establishment. The filthy stench of mass betrayal by an organisation that most of us at one stage thought was working for the people still lies heavy.
We must each grasp the opportunity to take more control of our lives and most of all unite with each other with our common causes and be tolerant of our differences. There is a long way to go and we will need the help of each other before the truth shines bright and banishes the Bettisons into the back of beyond.
Live from the heart and the truth will shine through you like it did Anne Williams, RIP
