Butler Sloss Review into Child Sexual Abuse by Two Vicars in Chichester Diocese 2012

Only when the truth is faced, when victims have told what happened to them, those who knew and did nothing have answered questions, and when those who tried to report and were ignored are heard, will we be able to understand what it is that needs to happen next….[2]

Stop Church Child Abuse (SCCA) ,a  working group of lawyers, therapists and other survivor charities, [5], are calling for an independent government funded inquiry into past and present  child sexual abuse cases, summarised the situation surrounding the Butler Sloss Review, in their Updating Report for SCCA Campaign [2], as follows..

“At the beginning of 2011 Baroness Butler-Sloss was asked to conduct a Review [1] into child protection failings [ie child sexual abuse/child torture] within the Diocese of Chichester in respect of two vicars, Roy Cotton and Colin Pritchard. The report was published in May 2011 and found the Bishop of Lewes Wallace Benn to have acted incompetently. Numerous recommendations were made for improving responses to reported allegations of child abuse, especially where allegations are made by adults reporting abuse when they were children. Within days of the report being published survivors and vicars within the diocese contacted Butler Sloss claiming that the facts given to her by Bishop Wallace and the former Archdeacon of Hastings and Brighton, now Bishop of Blackburn Nicholas Reade, were incorrect. The Bishop they said had allowed the convicted sex offender, Rev Roy Cotton, who had further allegations made against him, to continue in ministry within the parish run by his co-accused Colin Pritchard, where children attended and where he was allowed to work with children Butler-Sloss wrote an addendum report (page 49 [1]) to her review published in January 2012 setting out how she had been misled by Bishop Benn and Bishop Reade during her review.”

My reservations are that I am wary of lawyers, who often make more money out of a court case than the victims get in compensation for their abuse. I also wonder why the SCCA website referred to in the NAPAC newsletter, [5] is not set up. However I  leave it to more experienced survivors and campaigners  who know more to leave comments as to their views. However I feel the updating report is a useful contribution to the Child Sexual Abuse debate.

I also have only skimmed the Butler Sloss Review and Addendum and welcome any comments or contributions to put this further into context, either locally or nationally.

Updates 2017 Jan 3 In case the report disappears as many have it is now uploaded to this blog ebs_report__addendum1202282

Please note that victims of abuse may be triggered by reading this report. The Sanctuary for the Abused [A] has advice on how to prevent triggers.  National Association for People Abused in Childhood [B] has a freephone helpline and has links to local support groups. Other useful sites are One in Four [C] and Havoca [D]

  1. When all the vile, evil, sexual deviants out there, that have assaulted kids or watched them being sexually abused in pictures & the low life human beings, that have covered up for them, are ALL IN JAIL, then it will drastically help CSA victims get ‘closure’ & stop other CSA victims being created.

Children are our future and every one of them deserves a childhood THEY WANT TO REMEMBER!
