Survivors from Forde Park School Devon speak out

I have been asked to share this which I am happy to do. Survivors Radio host is Matthew, Irreverent Buddhist @Irreverent_B .
Serendipitously this also covers the Devon and Cornwall Police area,  as did my last post on the Azimuth Trust [10]. This radio programme covers Forde Park Approved School, Devon [2]. Brave survivors Tony, Bernie and Paul tell their stories. The more people that do this, in audio, video, articles, poetry, pictures or any and many formats, then the more truth will spread, whatever the state of play with the Inquiries.

Survivors Radio Forde Park Episode [1]

Similarly with the Azimuth case [10], only some people were prosecuted – in the Forde Park case only a handful out of a couple of hundred pepetrators. Some prominent people were implicated who were not prosecuted. In the programme it was said perpetrators Derek Hooper and John Ely were locked up recently for over 16 years each at a late stage in life.

This is a quick article and I have not researched this thoroughly but I have included some links below for people to check

As part of Operation Lentisk researchers found documents closed for 100 years, the same conditions imposed on other cases where prominent people are involved. I note some documents in the National archives [4] . There is also one FOI request [5]

The Guardian article ends with ” ‘Devon and Cornwall police are too close to it,’ he said. ‘I don’t feel I will be given a fair hearing. After everything that has happened to me, the least they could do is appoint an outside inquiry team.’ ” [3]

Derek Hooper, one abuser was a police officer, who received accomodation at the school. His appeal and more details are here [12] cathyfoxblog 2003 Jul 28 COURT OF APPEAL 28th July 2003 Derek Hooper.

Solicitors not acting properly on behalf of client victims is again a widespread truth found by these survivors, with the legals  “making a quick buck”. They were hampered in choosing a solicitor they wanted, and they never got justness, merely the “justice” that the system for the elite pumps out, pretending to be just.

Another very sad outcome of treating people like this is that some go on to offend themselves. William Goad, mentioned in my last article attended this approved school as a boy.   “I was put into Forde Park School, Newton Abbot, where I was physically, sexually and mentally abused for years.” “I was alone and only about 4’10” tall and the authorities, the people I should have looked up to was beating me up, caning me on my bare back and backside and taking me out of the dormitory at night to have sex with me.” [6]

“I am not innocent, I did some of the things I pleaded guilty to, and, I am in prison paying for it.”  “The authorities who put me into that approved school turned their back on me and I had to cope on my own. Now the same authorities have put me away again.” [6]

Goad died in prison leaving a trail of devastation behind him [7]. An abused victim becoming abuser makes the journey of life even worse for those that do not go on to abuse. Many innocent people find their own children being taken away in forced adoptions, ostensibly in “the best interests of the child ”  or because the children are at risk “of future emotional  harm”  on top of the stigma that that the abused face. [9]

There is some more information on needleblog Operation Greenlight [8]

This case leads to more pressure for an independent inquiry into a cover up of child abuse by Devon and Cornwall Police and the connections to prominent powerful paedophiles.

Since I wrote this rather rushed article I have received this email below from Bernie. He says that they are available to be contacted by survivors in Devon and Cornwall – their email address is

To reveal the truth about the nature of child sexual abuse in we need to build grass root movements of connected people across localities and regions. These will help give the support necessary for survivors and help piece together what happened in wider areas. So I am very pleased that Survivors of Forde Park are leading and reaching out to people in their area.

Bernies email

Many thanks for your kind comments about our radio show.
I am contacting you to ask whether you could post a message, on your blog, to any
survivors of abuse in Devon and Cornwall. We are “Survivors of Forde Park” and would be
only too pleased to offer them any help, or advice, that we can. We are not able to give
counselling of any kind, but we may be able to point them in the direction of
organisations who can. We can keep them advised about the continuing state of the CSA
Inquiry and give support in other ways. All correspondence will be confidential and will
receive replies as soon as possible. Our Co-Ordinator is Andy Kershaw and, as you are
probably aware, he is very determined to see this through; we all are. If there is any
help we can give, we are happy to do so.      We are in a unique situation in that we have
taken the authorities and perpetrators to Court and won our cases. We would like to help
others to do the same, even if it is just giving them an email address that they may not
have found otherwise.
We have been active for some time and we believe that NOW is the time to get
together and put an end to these crimes. It is not enough to sit back and wish, people
need to take action and give their support if we are to succeed.      We do not follow
radical groups or agitators, we want this done through the correct legal channels. This
way, the results will be more meaningful.      As for the radio show with Soundart Fm and
Matthew; Tony, Paul and I did it because we want to put out a message to anyone affected
by these crimes. They are not alone and they DO NOT HAVE TO BE VICTIMS, they can be
SURVIVORS! We do not believe that anyone who has been a victim of these crimes, has to
remain a victim. We do not believe that anyone who has been a victim is a “little” person.
If anything we talked about meant anything, to anyone, and they want to do something about it, we would gladly help empower them. We are SURVIVORS, we have the scars, we have the memories and we suffered the damage. But; we are still here; damaged but unbroken. This is what we want for all those who suffered.      It is not just about justice. It’s also about people taking back their “self”.      We have an email address:     I am new to Twitter and not great on a pc so I have no idea how to post an email address on there, or if it’s at all possible? I would be grateful if you could let me know if it is and, if so, how to do it.      Thank you for posting links to the radio show, we have seen positive comments about it and that it has struck chord’s with some people. That was the aim of it, to get the message out there.      Once again, I thank you for your comments.
Yours Sincerely,

  1. Thanks Cathy and Pip. Survivors Voices is helping people speak their truth – need all the help we can to get people to wake up to the reality

  2. Cathy, I’ve no doubt that I wish to follow you – can’t see the link to the article in question but it’s not going to change my mind. I am disheartened by divisions amongst survivors: they threaten the inquiry and therefore the safety of future generations.

I have no wish to take sides or block anybody – except the trolls, of course. I was quite upset with myself when I went to check I was following you and discovered I’d blocked you.
