Matthew powerfully tells his story of child sexual abuse and healing from his trauma. This was to fill in due to there being no internet access in the new studio, and he does this solo – no easy task.
Please note that victims of abuse may be triggered by reading or listening to this information. The Sanctuary for the Abused [A] has advice on how to prevent triggers. National Association for People Abused in Childhood [B] has a freephone helpline and has links to local support groups. Other useful sites are One in Four [C] and Havoca [D]. Useful post on triggers [E] from SurvivorsJustice [F] blog.
For beginners a good guide to meditation for survivors that Matthew recommends is the link on Jim Hopper’s page under the heading “How Can I Cultivate Greater Mindfulness? ” Mattthew says he has a basic instruction which is very clear, simple and honest.
Matthew has a more general guide “There is also an instruction I have written on the homepage of a meditation forum I run vipassanaforum.net scroll down to “Shamatha/Calm Abiding” -but honestly, Jim’s is better than mine for survivors – mine is more general.”
If you would like to hear more from Matthew, there is an interview with him from 2010 covering inter-related issues of child abuse, recovery, meditation, freemasonry, the Catholic church and more – it pre-dates (and predicts) many of the now-emerging scandals. The interviewer was Greg Szymanski and it can be heard here
Books that Matthew recommends are:
“Memory and Abuse: Remembering and Healing the Effects of Trauma”, Dr.
Charles L. Whitfield, M.D. Reviewed here
Whitfield also wrote “Healing the Child Within” and “A Gift to Myself” – Matthew has not read these yet, but says that they are highly regarded. All his books are available through Amazon or by order from bookstores if not in stock.
“Healing Trauma” – Peter Levine, he says is an excellent resource;
Tulku Thondup’s “The Healing Power of Mind” from a Buddhist/ Meditation perspective.
Matthew says that “In general if someone wants to get in touch with themselves through meditation via a teacher or retreat it is important to take things slowly and get to know the organisation – and be honest about the challenges one is facing. ”
“I do not generally recommend particular Ashrams or sects, they can be damaging to people in recovery – and especially any “intensive” retreat practices are best avoided. There is a very gentle and good one week non-sectarian retreat at “The Barn” retreat centre on the Sharpham Estate in Devon link here The Barn is the one place I know where no BS goes down.”
Thank you to Matthew for his story, his advice and his links and his courage not only in largely overcoming his own abuse but also in telling his own story to try and help others.
