Leicestershire Child Abuse 2 – Timeline of a Child Rapist 3  – Michael Ingram

Michael John Norman Ingram aka Father Ingram aka Father Chris appears to have been actively abusing children for at least half a century.

He was born in 1932 and died on 28th August 2000 in Leicester Royal Infirmary following a car crash two weeks earlier.  The car crash was self imposed, when he drove at a wall, during his trial for charges of sexual offences against 6 boys, 30 years earlier.

In a trial in 2000 with Judge Benson presiding, Ingram was found guilty of sexual offences against boys between 1970 and 1978, when he was Dominican Priest at the Holy Cross Priory Church in Leicester. He was also a child counsellor with the Family Services Unit. Abuse was perpetrated at Coston Lodge, a farmhouse converted by Ingram into a holiday home for deprived children near Melton Mowbray in North Leicestershire. Abuse also happened during a trip to the Isle of Wight.

The 1998 investigation, Operation Minute, which led to his prosecution was at least the third investigation into Ingrams child sexual abuse. There was a 1991 investigation into late 1980s abuse but the complainant withdrew the allegation and in 1994 there was an investigation by the Metropolitan Police into late 1960s abuse.

1950s

46 years before Ingrams trial in 2000, a warrant had been issued for the arrest of a Father Ingram on the grounds of unnatural offences against a pupil at the London Choir School Bexley [35]. His situation was discussed in Parliament [36] [35]. He went on the run to Northern Ireland but was later sentenced. Some details are confirmed by Michael Crawford of “Frank Spencer” fame [38].

Whether the Father Ingram discussed in Parliament is the same Father Ingram as the rest is uncertain but some details seem to fit. What does not seem to fit are some details in this question. Dr Horace King, MP Southampton, Test asked “Is the Minister aware that the headmaster of a private grammar school in Hampshire was recently sent to gaol for offences against children and that at the trial it emerged that not only had he a long record of such offences, but that he had also been headmaster of other private schools?” [37]

Father Ingram states he was a member of the Dominican Order from 1952, but Scorer thinks it was 1958 [53 p69]. Although Ingram did not defend paedophilia directly, he would say and write that many of the relationships were loving and that the investigations into the abuse were more harmful than the abuse itself. He appeared to base his views on Alfred Kinsey who suggested that sexual relationships between adults and children were “not necessarily harmful” but that it was “only society’s attitude that caused the harm” [53]

Could a 22 year old be a headmaster, have a long record of such offences and been headmaster of other private schools? Are some details incorrect or were there two Father Ingrams, both of whom were child abusers? Was the London Choir School Ingram an imposter using a pseudonym? What happened to him? Which were the other private schools that this 50’s Father Ingram was the Head?

If this Ingram was not the same then what was the 2000 convicted Ingram doing in the 1950s?

1960s

Ingram claimed to study Educational Psychology at Oxford University, Child Psychology and Psychotherapy at the controversial Tavistock clinic in the mid 1960’s, followed in the late 60’s by work as a child counsellor at St Thomas Hospital [8]. He also claimed to work at Maudsley Hospital [54] and Tom O’Carroll said he worked amongst the deprived children of Camden [60], where exactly is not known nor what it entailed.

Did he really work and study at these places? Where did he work with children in Camden? There are likely to be cases of abuse from this time.

 1970s

By the 70’s Ingram had moved to Leicester and the Holy Cross church. This is the time when he is known to have committed child sexual offences that brought him to trial, back in Leicester, twenty odd years later in 2000 [2]. The Dominican order also ran a junior school at the church and a boys’ club, which Ingram was also involved with [31][12].

In addition he was a child counsellor with the Leicester Family Service Unit, described as being part of social services, which cared for under-privileged children [31][12]. Ingram says he worked at the FSU from 1970 -1973 but Councillor Dunphy was under the impression he was working for the FSU in 1975 [[62]12.2-12.9].

Early 1970s Ingram was working with the Catholic Church on Planned Parenthood and book for which he was at first Editor. However he disagreed with stance of the church and advocated contraception.  He was Book Consultant with the International Catholic Child Bureau Geneva, and in the mid 1970s he was two years as Chaplain to the English Speaking community in Geneva and two at the invitation of Canon Moerman as Secretary-General of International Commission in Geneva, with active participation in international conferences in different parts of Europe and Vancouver. He also took up residence in Geneva to work full time with him.  Ingram visited Louvain, London, Bucharest.

Two of his more well known studies about child abuse in the 1970s, which derived from his child counselling were:-

1. “A casework study of an abused child and his family” about Jimmy, a 9 year old child, who was referred to Ingram in 1972, in Social Service Quarterly in 1974 of which two pages are reproduced below. This was also used in a booklet pointing out shortcomings in the social welfare services by the National Council of Social Service as reported in the Catholic Herald 1975 [24] [12]. It was discussed in 1975 Papers from a Family Service Unit Time to Consider [25] [12] and later in Social Science 1980 Oct 1.

When you know that Ingram is a child abuser the description of his behaviour with Jimmy is disturbing. Ingram took Jimmy away for a week’s holiday  “After this holiday, he began to show me his aggression. He would play games in which he insulted me and I was supposed to chase him in some way. Then he started calling me ‘Frankenstein’ or ‘Vampire’ or ‘Monster’ and the punishments I was supposed to administer became increasingly [Page 81] sadistic. I was to crush his head, bite his throat, flay him, torture him, and so on . . . These games proved to be the most rewarding part of the treatment, for the playful discharge of aggressive fantasies loosened his tongue and we were able to have long conversations afterwards.” [43*]

2. Ingram’s other well known study was of “indecently assaulted boys” carried out in the 1970s. For the article “Filthy” published in Libertarian Education,  in Spring 1977 [53] the study comprised 57 boys. A later paper delivered at the “Love and Attraction” conference on Sept 8 1977 mentioned in the Guardian [3] mentioned 91 boys, so it was nearly complete. By September 1978 it was 92 [4]  and 1979  [15*] [14] [4]. This study was also included in the 1981 Children and Sex [66][67]

The data was collated into a paper in 1977 by Ingram, and so must have been collected before that. Tom O’Carroll said  ” I had read his [Ingrams] study of 91 man-boy paedophilic relationships – a study which had come out of his work as a child psychologist at St Thomas Hospital, London and with the Leicester Family Service Unit [54]

Ingram maintained that all but 15 boys were willing partners, and in all but 10 the adult was a “kindly and loving figure ” to the child [4]. These were 92 instances of boys under 14 who were sexually abused by “adult social workers, teachers, clergy, choirmasters, youth leaders and scoutmasters” [45] .

Ingram claimed in his cv that he was only with the Family Service Units until 1973 [8]. Is this correct, was it a genuine mistake or was he trying to hide relevant information given that the cv was produced for his trial? Councillor Dunphy was under the impression that Father Ingram was still working for the Family Service Units in 1975, according to the Kirkwood Report [[62]12.2-12.9]. In fact Dunphy went to Father Ingram to seek his advice as he had had a disagreement with Frank Beck as to Becks version of regression therapy treatment of the children. Councillor Dunphy unknowingly went from the frying pan of Frank Beck, child abuser, to the fire of Father Ingram, child abuser.[[62]12.2-12.9]

Family Service Units [FSU] grew out of the work of mainly Quaker pacifists during the second World War, working to help bombed out families in the cities. The first unit was set up in 1947. A registered charity, most of the FSUs’ finance came from central and local government grants and they worked closely with the statutory social services. Graham Murphy, organiser of the Leicester unit, said that while each unit was different, they generally aimed to work with families who had a lot of problems with which they could not cope. There were 23 family service units, almost half of them in London [45]. At the least Leicester County Council should have had contracts with the FSU. They went into administration in 2006 and were taken over by the Family Welfare Asociation [61]  The FSU archives are in Liverpool.

From around 1977 Ingram worked with Tom O’Carroll and PIE, writing articles for their Magpie publication, intending to speak on PIE’s behalf at the “Love and Attraction Conference”in Swansea, and at the PIE meeting in Conway Hall when his church prevented him and Tom O’Carroll read his speech out instead. This was at the peak of PIEs publicity, with anti-paedophile demonstrations outside.

1978 Ingram took the Requiem Mass for fellow PIE member Alan Doggett at Holy Cross Church [32] after Doggetts suicide [78] before his trial. The year after Ingram got his paper “The Participating Victim: A study of 92 cases of sexual contact between adult and child” published in British Journal of Sexual Medicine as well as his book published on the Love and Attraction Conference [53].

A boy abused by Janner was referred to a Child Sexual Counsellor “My impression was that Mr Beak suspected that Mr Janner was having an improper relationship with me and because I would not confide in him personally, he arranged for me to attend the sexual therapy clinic in Leicester…” [[47] Statement p6]

Was the Child Sexual Counsellor part of the Family Services Unit? Was it even Father Ingram? How many Social workers did Janner know? Did he know Beck? Were Leicestershire Childrens Homes a source of boys for abuse for Janner? Was Frank Beck the procurer? Did Janner bring other VIPs to abuse chidlren or take children to abuse?

Who were all the 92 abusers that were adult social workers, teachers, clergy, choirmasters, youth leaders and scoutmasters in Ingrams study? Why did Ingram only go to the police about two of 92 child abusers? Was Frank Beck one of the abusive Social Workers? Who were the others? Did some work for FSU? Why did Leicestershire County Council not follow up on Ingrams exposures? Did Leicestershire Council use Ingram to minimise the fallout from their employees abusing by sending children abused by Council social workers to Ingram for counselling? Why did Leicestershire County Council not call the police over the known abusers?

Why did the Police not follow up on the child abusers?  What did the police do about the 2 cases reported? Did the police actually cover up child abuse for some reason?

Who else in PIE did Ingram know? Was Ingram a procurer of children for them?

Why did the Dominicans not stop Ingrams pro paedophile stance? Why did they not speak out about child abuse at any stage? Were there other Dominican child abusers? With Ingrams contacts in the Catholic Church was he in a network of child abusers with them?

Who were the other child abusers in the Leicestershire network?

1980s

There are no entries in the 1980s and 1990s on Ingrams cv.  Ingrams activity is largely unknown apart from getting his study of 92 boys published in the journal Children and Sex and a chapter Chapter 7 Children and Sex: A Child Counsellors View in Warren Middletons book Betrayal of Youth. Offences committed by Ingram in the late 80’s were complained about in 1991 but the complainant withdrew them [53].

What was Ingram up to in the 1980s? When did he move to Cambridge? Did he work with children?

1990s

Information about the 1990s is also scanty. It is not clear yet when he left Leicester or moved to Cambridge. According to Richard Scorers immensely informative 2014 book Betrayed: The English Catholic church and the Sex Abuse Crisis [53],  Ingram was in Cambridge in 1991 working as a “freelance drugs counsellor”.  He was known as Father Chris when in Cambridge [77]

Sometime around 1990 Ingram left the Dominican Priesthood, although the date varies with the source from 1989-1992 [8] [5] [2]. For a second time Ingram was investigated, this time in 1994 for offences in the late 60’s but the prosecution was discontinued [53].

In 1997 four of his books were published on a range of subjects -From Atlantis to Doomsday: Patterns in World History [12] [29], The Spirit on the Deep: Studies in Religious and Moral Education, And Sparks Flew: Religion, Society and Taboo in the Modern World and his autobiography The Owl and the Pussycat My Autobiography [68][28]  All four books especially the latter would throw light upon his life and any links to sources of digital copies would be appreciated.

1998 brought the third investigation into his child abuse in the 1970s -Operation Minute led by Detective Inspector Russell L’Homme. This led to his trial in August 2000 and his suicide in his underpants by driving his car into a wall before sentencing.

His sister however unusually appealed against his conviction on Michaels behalf which was rejected [72]. I have heard no reference to an inquest, which I thought there would be and the third unusual thing is that his death is given in 2001 by the website Genes Reunited [71] [71b] Whether this is a typing error or whether it is somehow mixed up with an inquest is not known. It is also not known where he was buried or cremated.

He is said to have left the Domicans but the Pope in his 2000 book referenced Ingram as Cambridge Blackfriars which is a Dominican Priory in the centre of Cambridge [27]

Did Ingram really leave the Dominicans? Why was Michael John Norman known as Father Chris in Cambridge? What did  Ingram do in Cambridge and did he work with children? Was there an inquest on Ingrams death? Was he buried or cremated? Where?

Ingram and the Police

1950s A Father Ingram committed offences at London Choir School and elsewhere and jailed. Was this the same man?

1991 Investigation about abuse in the late 80s but complainant withdrew [53a] , presumably by Cambridge Police

1994 investigated by Met police for abuse in 1960s but prosecution was discontinued [53a]

1998 Operation Minute led by Detective Inspector Russell L’Homme, presumably of Leicestershire constabulary, into abuse from the 1970s in Leicester and Isle of Wight. This led to successful prosecution.

Apparently out of the 92 cases of child abuse he wrote about that counselled, he reported only 2 to the police [69b]. Ingram did not tell the parents but he traced 16 of the men for counselling [1977 sept 4]

Child Abuse Network

One victim from the 1970s in Leicester said “There were other men who, to my knowledge had no connection with the congregation, come out and stay (at Coston Lodge) for a night. I have no doubt it was a base for paedophile activity.” He believed Ingram was not working alone and was a member of a paedophile network. ” [33]

The boy claims he was abused by Ingram while in a tent as another supervisor looked on and only found out more than 25 years later that his brother was also attacked on the same trip [31] [12]. This is the case that led to a successful prosecution.

Ingram knew Tom O’Carroll [54]  O’Carroll wrote in about 1979 “I had known Father Ingram for some time. I had received his hospitality at the Holy Cross Priory, Leicester, where he lived.

According to Ian Pace, Ingram was a member of PIE and contributed to several editions of Magpie [60] . The chances are that he knew other members of PIE. He also did the memorial service for child abuser Alan Doggett .  For Doggetts crimes see Ian Paces blog [58] and Andrew Norfolks Articles [59]

It must be a strong probability that Ingram knew Frank Beck, as they mixed in the same Social Services circles in the same locality, as well as both having an abusive interest in children, though I have no direct evidence that he did. There was certainly indirect contact via Councillor Henry Dunphy who spoke about Becks methods to Ingram [[62] 12.8]

Similarly probabilities must have been high for Ingram knowing Greville Janner MP, with similar child abuser interests and same locality, though again I have no direct evidence.

Ingram quotes Morris Fraser [64] and has similar views on the causes of paedophilia about which they both wrote, narcissism and “some sort of maturation problem” []  Ingrams lecturing in the Eastern US universities may possibly connect him to Morris Fraser/Yale’s Parker Rossman 1973 ring [ht @snowfaked]. But did he know him?

Thomson wrote [70] of Ingram working in London providing children with opportunities for free play, where they could light fires, fight, swear, be destructive and in general uncork themselves. He had spoken of children, overcrowding and the problem of lost freedom at Vancouver United Nations conference on Habitat. Roger Moody was also a pioneer of libertarian playgrounds. Was this Camden? Did they work together?

Father Ingram mixed in lofty Catholic Church circles. The Catholic Church is also renowned for its high proportion of child abusers, particularly homosexuals males. Ingram was actually quoted in a book written by Ratzinger aka Pope Benedict XVI about obscure succession to the British throne [27].

Ratzinger is known for his letter sent to every bishop in the Catholic Church reminding them of the strict penalties facing those who revealed confidential details concerning enquiries into allegations against priests of certain grave ecclesiastical crimes, including sexual abuse, which were reserved to the jurisdiction of the Congregation [49]. The letter extended the prescription or statute of limitations for these crimes to ten years. However, when the crime is sexual abuse of a minor, the “prescription begins to run from the day on that which the minor completes the eighteenth year of age.”[50] [51]  Ratzinger  also had accusations against him of child abuse [76].

Who was the supervisor who watched child abuse? Who were the other paedophiles linked to Coston Lodge? What were Ingrams child abuse networks in Leicestershire, in the FSU, in Leicestershire County Council, in LCC Social Services? What were his links in the Leicestershire Dominicans and associated youth clubs? What were his links in other Dominican areas? What were his links in the Catholic Church? In Geneva, Lovain and Switzerland? in Rome? To the Pope? in the US?

Conclusions

This timeline of Father Ingram, raises many more questions about child abuse in Leicestershire, about him, other abusers and the institutions that allowed it to happen.

Frank Beck was made out by the Kirkwood report to be a lone paedophile not connected to any other paedophile network. That facade has fallen apart as Leicestershire County Council was stuffed with child abusers. One of these abusers was Father Ingram who actually had sexually abused children sent to him by the council.

What did the Council senior management know, what did Council social workers know? What did the Leicestershire Police know and do nothing about? When is the Foster Report on Police  mismanagement of Child Abuse going to be published? The cover up of child abuse in Leicestershire is also all tied to Lord Greville Janner the child abuser who continues to get away with his crimes whilst being a member of the House of Lords.

We live in a country infiltrated and ruled by many paedophiles. That must cease. The truth must be revealed.

Are Leicestershire County Council serious about stopping child sexual abuse? Are the Leicestershire Police? Are the Government?  Is the Goddard Inquiry?

The Bishop of Rochester and others have tried to clear it up and found it impossible. Is not it shameful that these people should take on private schools and have children in their charge?[37]

Dr Horace King, MP Southampton, Test also asked ” Is the Minister aware that the headmaster of a private grammar school in Hampshire was recently sent to gaol for offences against children and that at the trial it emerged that not only had he a long record of such offences, but that he had also been headmaster of other private schools? Is it not the duty of the Minister to exercise her powers under the Education Act to protect children physically, educationally and morally against people who are not fit to teach them? [37]

1971-78 Ingram committed sex offences against six boys, committed between 1971 and 1978, but was only charged in 2000 [2]. Ingram abused the boys when he was serving as a priest at Holy Cross Priory in Leicester. The charges included one of a serious sexual offence, two of gross indecency and four of indecent assault.

1972 Jan Jimmy Smith, disturbed child, was referred to Father Ingram as councillor on which Ingram developed his first paper [See Case Study page 1 and 2 below]

1973 International Planned Parenthood Conference and Book [11][12] Father Michael Ingram, a British Dominican who was editor of the book at the outset. 1974 Social Service Quarterly [39*]   Time to consider: papers from a Family Service Unit. At present Leicester has ten social workers and a student unit. The paper about Jimmy, aged nine, written by Michael Ingram, a child counsellor, gives the greatest cause for concern. Jimmy was the most disturbed member of a severely deprived and disturbed family which was disintegrating. He lived in appalling conditions, ‘ which it would take a Dickens to describe ‘, and was suffering intensely both emotionally and physically; in some ways he had almost ceased to exist as a human being. Thanks to some outstanding work by the therapist against great odds, Jimmy made some progress and his symptoms were relieved. In his efforts to help Jimmy and his family with obtaining vital resources from such statutory agencies as housing, social security, education and the social services, the writer is brought face to face with the terrible frustrations with which this family had to live.

1975 Jul 4 Catholic Herald [24] [12] Special report on work with problem family from Leicester Family Unit. A report by a priest-psychotherapist pointing out shortcomings in the social welfare services appears in a booklet published yesterday by the National Council of Social Service. Fr Michael Ingram, OP, who is a professional social worker, described his work with an emotionally disturbed boy and his family at the Leicester Family Service Unit. The boy, aged nine, was one of a “multi-problem” family of seven. He had been deserted by the mother, his father was emotionally deprived after an upbringing in an orphanage and his two eldest sisters were living with former prisoners in the family home. The youngster was terribly withdrawn, enuretic and illiterate. Violent rages alternated with a refusal to cooperate with anyone.

There are 23 family service units, almost half of them in London. They grew out of the work of mainly Quaker pacifists during the last war, working to help bombed out families in the cities. The first unit being set up in 1947. A registered charity, most of the FSUs’ finance comes from central and local government grants and they work closely with the statutory social services. Graham Murphy, organiser of the Leicester unit, said that while each unit was different, they generally aimed to work with families who had a lot of problems with which they could not cope.

Michael Ingram’s ‘Casework study of a disturbed child and his family’ is an impressive demonstration of a worker capable of conducting an intensive psychotherapeutic relationship, within exceptionally generous amounts of time spent in performing a wide variety of roles and practical tasks. He compares the flexibility of his work with the limits imposed on social workers in statutory agencies. ‘Without all these role-assumptions, however, I consider it would have been impossible to help the boy in any way”.

But he failed to turn up and his speech was read by the group’s chairman, Thomas O’Carroll.

c. 1977 Magpie Issue 8 Michael Ingram, ‘Laws of Consent’, pp. 5-6
This proposed equalising homo- and hetero-sexual ages of consent. ‘In the discussion which follows you might like to express your opinions as to whether 16 is the best age.’ (p. 5) The duty of the law to protect the simple from exploitation, so Ingram suggested that the age of consent might be flexible, ‘and that parents who feel that their daughter under the age of, say, 18 is being exploited should be able to invoke the law by some means to prevent it.’ Laws should apply equally to men and women.
Either laws should apply to children, and contraceptive information only be given to parents, and doctors forbidden to prescribe pill to under-age girls, or laws should not apply at all to under-age children.
‘It might be possible to devise a system whereby the consent laws become more flexible, and prohibit intercourse, or sexual activity between persons who [sic] age difference is greater than two or three years when one of them is below the given age of consent.’ (all p. 5) [60]

1980 Respecting children: social work with young people Margaret Crompton Sage Publications [43*] , Oct 1, 1980 – Social Science [Page 80-81] Leicester Family Service Unit’s philosophy and policy enabled their children’s counsellor Michael Ingram to undertake between ten and fifteen hours work a week with a highly disturbed, unhappy and neglected nine-year-old boy. One of the first tasks was to help Jimmy play. In the course of the first fortnight’s work Jimmy moved. from no play at all, just rocking, through ‘very bizarre’ play with animals, furniture and dolls to an interest in ‘playing with keys, knobs, buttons and any sort of mechanical controls’ (1975, p. 42). Michael Ingram used this interest by rigging up ‘a very elaborate electronic system’ and showing Jimmy how to use a tape recorder and numerous other pieces of equipment. Quite soon he took Jimmy away for a week’s holiday: After this holiday, he began to show me his aggression. He would play games in which he insulted me and I was supposed to chase him in some way. Then he started calling me ‘Frankenstein’ or ‘Vampire’ or ‘Monster’ and the punishments I was supposed to administer became increasingly [Page 81] sadistic. I was to crush his head, bite his throat, flay him, torture him, and so on . . . These games proved to be the most rewarding part of the treatment, for the playful discharge of aggressive fantasies loosened his tongue and we were able to have long conversations afterwards (p. 43).Even more useful than Michael Ingram’s description of Jimmy’s behaviour is his comment on his own feelings:I found . . . that these games caused me anxiety at times and I had to limit them to what I could easily tolerate, which was unfortunate, as he began to have a need to discharge in this way and if he did not play because I was tired, he went berserk at home and smashed things up (p. 43).

1998 Operation Minute investigation into Ingram. The judge praised Detective Inspector Russell L’Homme and Detective Sergeant Drew Elliott and their team for their 2 and a half year investigation [6] [12]. It was instigated due to two men who had attended camping holiday near Carisbrooke Castle, under the guise of Holy Cross Boys Club, when Ingram assaulted and buggered several boys [72].

1999 Aug 21 Michael Crawford of Frank Spencer fame, “However, it wasn’t until I was nine [born Jan 1942 therefore nine in 1951] and I started attending the London Choir School that my problems really began. [38] It was an extremely well-respected school and was responsible for supplying choirs to places such as St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Brompton Oratory. It was also a very hard school. The head was called Father Ingram. Unluckily for me, we shared the same name and the school bullies, suspecting he was a relative, would use me as a human punching bag.” Shortly after we moved, there were stories in the press that Father Ingram had engaged in improper behaviour with some pupils. I think because I was one of the youngest I was shielded from most of it, but there was one incident that should have given me a clue as to what the gossip was all about. On our way back from singing at St. Paul’s Cathedral one day, a few of the boys started kissing each other. My curiosity piqued, I asked my neighbour if, when he had a moment, I might try it too. Without so much as a by-your-leave, he obligingly pulled himself away from Tibitz Minor and sloppily kissed me full on the lips. I was promptly sick over his shoes, which gave me a fairly clear indication that it wasn’t something I wanted to try again. Much later, it emerged that Father Ingram wasn’t a clergyman at all, and I believe he was sentenced to a ten-year term.

2000 Aug 6 [31] [12] Abused boys had trusted Catholic priest, court told. Michael Ingram, 68, denied four charges of indecent assault, two of gross indecency and one of buggery from 1970 to 1978 against boys aged nine to 12, including two brothers. Ingram, from Cambridge, who was known as Father Chris, is said to have “abused his position of trust” in an order of Dominican monks in Leicester to target young boys. The alleged offences took place while he was in charge of the altar boys at the city’s Holy Cross Church, in Wellington Street, in the centre of Leicester before and while on trips where he was often in charge. The offences only came to light in 1998 when one of the two brothers said to have been assaulted contacted police, sparking an inquiry. The alleged victim, who is now 41, kept his assault secret for more than 20 years out of “shame”, the court heard. The boy claims he was abused by Ingram while in a tent as another supervisor looked on and only found out more than 25 years later that his brother was also attacked on the same trip. Graham Buchanan lawyer for prosecution. The Dominican order also ran a junior school at the church and a boys’ club, which Ingram was also involved with, the court heard. In addition he was a child counsellor, and worked with the Leicester Family Unit, part of social services, which cared for under-privileged children.  The court was told Ingram ran trips for boys to a Coston Lodge, a farm house near Melton Mowbray in north Leicestershire where a number of the alleged offences took place. Another victim, who is due to give evidence in the trial, claims he was made to carry out lewd acts on Ingram with another boy in the bed while staying at Coston Lodge.

2000 Aug 15 Birmingham Post [30] Move these perverts council told re Portsmouth. Separately, former Catholic parish priest was yesterday found guilty of sexually assaulting young boys in his care up to 30 years ago. Michael Ingram (68), of Cambridge, had denied seven counts at Leicester Crown Court, including indecent assault, gross indecency and a serious sexual offence while he was in charge of altar boys at a Leicester church. Ingram was not in court to hear the verdicts returned after the court heard he had been involved in a bizarre car accident which left him in hospital. Judge Richard Benson told the jury an eyewitness saw Ingram appear to deliberately drive a Toyota Carina across a road and hit a wall. When found he had his seat belt on but was dressed only in a T-shirt and underpants.[12]

2000 Aug 15 Leicester Mercury [33] Coston Lodge Near Melton Mowbray Father Michael Ingram  #comments Comment posted by Cathy Fox [12] Sex abuse took place between 1970 and 1978 while Ingram was priest at the Holy Cross Priory Church in Leicester. Boys were subjected to sex ordeals on a camping trip organised by the church to the Isle of Wight and weekend trips to a farmhouse n Coston Lodge n near Melton, supervised by Ingram. The Leicester-born victim was just 10 when the abuse began. The victim said: “He used a ranking system. He would create an atmosphere of competition among the children. Then once he had ensnared them he would move on to the abuse. I was his special boy.”He was abused at Coston Lodge, a farmhouse converted into a holiday home for deprived children by Ingram, and during a trip to the Isle of Wight. He believes Ingram was not working alone and was a member of a paedophile network.  “There were other men who, to my knowledge had no connection with the congregation, come out and stay (at Coston Lodge) for a night. I have no doubt it was a base for paedophile activity.” “If anything, I have something to be proud of, in having gone through with the court case, secured the conviction and protected children in the future.” Ingram was today under police guard in hospital after being found guilty of the offences. He was not in court to hear the verdicts because he was receiving treatment for ankle and knee fractures sustained in a car crash on Sunday. Judge Richard Benson on the case.

2000 Aug 19 The Tablet [2] [12]Former Priest Guilty of Sex Abuse. A former Dominican priest was this week found guilty at Leicester Crown Court of sex offences against six boys, committed between 1971 and 1978. Michael Ingram, who left the Dominicans in 1993 and was dispensed from the priesthood, had denied the charges. He will not be sentenced before 4 September because of injuries sustained last weekend when he drove his car into a wall. Ingram abused the boys when he was serving as a priest at Holy Cross priory in Leicester. The charges included one of a serious sexual offence, two of gross indecency and four of indecent assault.

2000 Aug 28  Victims of sexual abuse by clergy are to walk in silence to Westminster on 28 August to present a memorandum to Archbishop Murphy-O’Connor. The so called “Names Walk” is being organised by Survivors of Spiritual Abuse by the Catholic Church, a group so concerned not only with those who have been abused sexually, but also physically, mentally and spiritually. Walkers will carry names of abuse victims, living and dead. The group hopes that these will eventually be incorporated into a memorial. An open letter released last week by the Bradford-based organisers of the walk refers to the case of Fr Michael Hill, a paedophile priest from the archbishop’s former diocese of Arundel and Brighton. Archbishop Murphy-O’Connor recently admitted that he had been mistaken in appointing Hill to a post at Gatwick airport after the priest had already received treatment for his paedophilia. It also asks him to fund a memorial to abuse victims, and to provide “an absolute unconditional apology from the Catholic Church”. The walk is being supported by the groups We Are Church and Catholics for a Changing Church. (Home News, 22 July). 2015 May 19 [74] Cathy Fox Email sent to Blackfriars Cambridge Dear Sir
I am researching Michael John Ingram of Blackfriars Cambridge who also went under the name Father Chris. I was wondering what dates he was at the Priory and whether it is normal practise to rename a father under a different name?
I would be grateful for your help.

 Appendix 1

Tom O’ Carroll would write underneath:

‘To the weary traveller, the Priory of the Holy Cross, Leicester is a haven of warmth and welcome; in the best traditions of the mediaeval Church, the wayfarer is plied with good, wholesome victuals and no shortage of drink either – and one’s host, the good Father Michael, is the very embodiment of that spirit of hospitality: convivial, affable, a man of charm and engaging conversation. All in all, a stout fellow!

“I had known Father Michael for some time. I had received his hospitality at the Holy Cross Priory, Leicester, where he lived, and I had read his study of ninety-one man-boy paedophilic relationships – a study which had come out of his work as a child psychologist at St Thomas’s Hospital, London, and with the Leicester Family Service Unit. I had long known that, although he did not defend paedophilia as such, he knew that a lot of relationships were loving ones, in which more good was done than harm. What’s more, I knew that his study, giving substance to these views, had not been published, and I felt that it deserved to be – which is why I arranged for him to attend the Swansea conference on Love and Attraction, to give his paper there.

The whole thing had been arranged many months in advance. Father Michael had at one time contemplated publishing his paper in the United States – where incidentally, his views on sexuality appear to be held in more esteem than in Britain, Harvard University having invited him to give a series of lectures on sexual ethics – but readily accepted my suggestion that Swansea would provide a good platform. Accordingly, I contacted the conference organizers on his behalf, and they accepted his paper without demur.

They accepted my registration too: I had applied to attend simply to find out what the academic world had to say about child sexuality and paedophilia, which were both on the agenda. I welcomed media interest in the conference, not because I was seeking publicity for PIE, as was alleged, but because I hoped attention would be drawn to the Ingram paper and to several others which I had reason to suppose would take a radical line (as they did). In the event, the conference organizers were panicked by the heavy involvement of the press into turning the presentation of the paedophilia/child sexuality papers into a secret session. At least some of the academics presenting these papers agreed with the decision, and perhaps they were right: for by this time the mood of the press was such as to guarantee that its involvement would generate only heat, and no light. This work with children began when he studied child counselling as an associate student with the Tavistock Clinic, followed by work among deprived children in Camden, and later Leicester  [48]

[74] 2015 May 19 Email sent to Blackfriars Cambridge Dear Sir
I am researching Michael John Ingram of Blackfriars Cambridge who also went under the name Father Chris. I was wondering what dates he was at the Priory and whether it is normal practise to rename a father under a different name?
I would be grateful for your help. http://www.blackfriarscambridge.org.uk/

the St Thomas’s connection I need to try and understand – was Guys’ & St Thomas’s one institution then? Because Dr Maurice Yaffe was at Guy’s and another person who was mentored by Dr David Stafford Clarke was at Guy’s too

The Tatchell you mention here who is listed as having contributed a pro-paedophilic piece to the 1985 publication “Betrayal of Youth” – are you aware of this Tatchell’s connection to Bill Maloney?

REFERENCE MICHAEL J. INGRAM IN THE 1950’s.
I can confirm that in the 1950’s the above was a well respected, loved and dedicated teacher at my prep school. St Martins School, Kirkdale Manor, Nawton, York.
During the 1950 to 1957 time I was at this place, he certainly was not a Dominican monk or an ordained priest.
Nor did he show any paedophillic tendencies to any of the 7 to 14 year old boys.
I am so very sorry to learn of his demise and suicide.
I remember him as a good master.
I pray that God may have mercy on him.
