A man put a ladder up to the controversial statue of Ariel and Prospero by child abuser Eric Gill, at the front of BBC headquarters. He climbed up and started hitting the statue with a hammer.
“There’s pedos and propaganda at the BBC so it’s two birds with one stone”
Four and a half hours later he voluntarily came down on a hydraulic lift.
There appears remarkably little damage to the statue, in what mostly appears to be a symbolic defacing attack. More damage would have been caused with a chisel, and he could surely have not counted on being left for more than 4 hours. [20]
Eric Gill and his Art
Gill was thought of as something as a hero for his magnificent sculpting and other art including fonts. Mowever many people’s view changed radically after the publication of a book in 1989 by Fiona MacCarthy who had access to his diaries.
Eric Gill was exposed for illegal and immoral sexual practices. Incestuous with his adult sisters, he also raped and anally raped his teenage daughters and had sexual relations with his dog, amongst other varied sexual unpleasantries described and perhaps best read here 2006 Other Moral ‘Pearls’ of Eric Gill [24]
Since the exposing of Gill as a sexual deviant, there has been a light airing of ideas about how you treat art when created by a being that would have been locked up if his behaviour had been known at the time. Clearly that has not come to a satisfactory conclusion and the largely symbolic attack on Gill’s statue commissioned by the BBC is a reminder that it is time for the debate to deepen.
It is unlikely to have been a coincidence that this attack happened in the wake of the not guilty findings against the Colston 4 who played parts in the toppling of the statue of Bristol Cable Colston 4 found not guilty of criminal damage to slave trader’s statue [30]
It is clear that the establishment as well as the mainstream /legacy media has not discussed this verdict in any knowledgeable manner, preferring it seems, ignorant opinion and polemic. Of course that sells and is quick and easy to write.

However as we cannot know on what basis the jury found the defendants not guilty, much speculation on “loopholes” is misplaced.
Calls for removal of Gill’s Work
There have been calls for Gill’s works to be removed since at least 1998, and maybe earlier if it was easier to search pre internet /early internet times.
In 1998 Margaret Kennedy, a campaigner for Ministers and Clergy Sexual Abuse Survivors called for the removal of Gill’s Stations of the Cross in Westminster Cathedral.
Kennedy’s argument was “Survivors couldn’t pray at the Stations of the Cross. They were done by a paedophile. The very hands that carved the stations were the hands that abused.” [21] 2007 BBC News Magazine Can the art of a paedophile be celebrated? [36]
“He abused his maids, his prostitutes, animals, he was having sex with everything that moved – a very deranged man sexually.” [36]
The Catholic Church would not budge an inch. In 2007 Bishop George Stack, a former administrator of Westminster Cathedral, was quoted as saying “There was no consideration given to taking these down. A work of art stands in its own right. Once it has been created it takes on a life of its own.” [36]
Bishop Stack’s argument appears palpably false. The artwork almost never stands in its own right. It is almost never divorced from the creator. An artwork’s life is bound up with its creator. Provenance is integral to the work. It is quite bizarre and desperate that this argument is made. When there is no provenance, it is keenly sought after.
Gill’s biographer Macarthy was quoted as saying “Gill’s behaviour was obviously reprehensible. He was a child abuser and he did completely renege on his Catholic principles. But what do we do? Do we turn our eyes away from his wonderful works of art or do we, as I think we should, try to explore further and see how they were arrived at.” [36]
Kennedy said that a ban would be a “marker of his abuse, a tangible, public statement that we find what he has done horrendous”.
Public Recognition of Child Abuse
Widespread public recognition that child sexual abuse happened only occurred in Britain after the Jimmy Savile revelations, a year or so after his death on 29th Oct 2011.
After the Savile revelations the calls for the removal of Gill’s work intensified. Again this came from survivors groups…
Fay Maxted, chief executive of The Survivors’ Trust, which supports survivors of rape and childhood sexual abuse said “It’s an insult to allow a work like this to remain in such a public place. ‘It is almost mocking survivors, it is intolerable.” [9]
The BBC spokesperson’s stance was “The statue of Ariel and Prospero on the front of Broadcasting House stands as a metaphor for broadcasting, executed by one of the last century’s major British artists whose work has been widely displayed in leading UK museums and galleries. There are no plans to remove or replace the sculptures at the front of Broadcasting House” [9]
Peter Saunders, chief executive of the National Association For People Abused In Childhood, NAPAC, said “There’s a strong argument that this should be removed. These symbols are in people’s faces. The statue was especially inappropriate in light of the recent Jimmy Savile scandal, he added. ‘But if you’ve been abused as a child then this is very insensitive and inappropriate.’ “ [9]
Savile was found to be a prolific paedosadist on a scale rarely known before and unique for a public figure. Savile’s offending included boys, girls, men, women, hospital patients, necrophilia and ritual abuse. He also had been honoured by the Pope with the Order of St Gregory the Great, and the Queen with an OBE. People awarded OBE’s are vetted!
The implied but unstated or at least unreported inappropriateness of the BBC’s behaviour in light of the Jimmy Savile scandal, was that
- The most prolific child rapist in public eye ever, Jimmy Savile was employed by the BBC, for 40+ years
- Savile was indisputably “the face” of the BBC
- Many people at the BBC were aware of Savile’s offending but nothing was done
- The BBC, even after Savile’s death, covered up Savile’s child abuse. They ditched a BBC Newsnight programme supported by multiple victim testimony, which was only into a tiny part of his offending This delayed for a year, exposure of much of Savile’s abuse before the dam broke [41]
- BBC had many other child abuse scandals, some of which had come out.
The BBC were very much seen as an enabler of Jimmy Savile’s widespread child and sexual abuse, with much evidence. The BBC protected him as a child abuser.
BBC and Gill’s Artwork
In light of the Savile exposures, it appeared exceedingly inappropriate to keep a statue by a self admitted child abuser, in the most prominent position that it could be. It was displayed at the front of the BBC headquarters, BBC Broadcasting House, Portland Place, London.
The BBC have more works by Gill – in addition to the statue Ariel and Prospero was statue The Sower, 3 friezes including ones called Ariel between Wisdom and Gaiety and Piping to the Children, as well as some abstract motif work.
As well as Gill’s stone artwork the BBC used the font that Gill had designed, throughout the BBC.
They used it in all their print and tv until last year, when the BBC changed to an inhouse font called the Reith font.
Interestingly the Reith font is named after BBC’s founder Lord Reith.

‘Reithian’ came to stand for a set of values at the Corporation that promoted moral responsibility and enlightenment. But the remarkable fact was that he spectacularly failed to implement those values in his own life. [43]
Lord Reith also features as the man who commissioned Gill to create the now controversial artwork.
Reith himself has also been exposed as having an unhealthy interest in children, yet this has received little publicity.

Part of the difficulty lay in Reith’s tortured sexuality. Throughout much of his early life, he appears to have been drawn to adolescent boys and even, in one case, to a young girl. If he had been around today, he could well have been helping child protection officers with their inquiries.

Soon the man and boy were going on holiday together, sharing beds and hot baths. Bowser even took to kissing Reith in public. The ages differ slightly in a book from Reith’s daughter but the story is confirmed…

BBC Response to Savile Exposure
This statement from the BBC after the Savile exposure was insulting…

The BBC was intransigent and unmoved. Even after the exposure of Savile’s abuse and their part in his ability to abuse and his actual abuse, the BBC chose not to even address the issues brought up by the statue and by survivors.
It was as though they did not care about Savile being a paedosadist, about Eric Gill being a child rapist, the BBC would do what it wanted…
There was no acceptance of any of the issues. The issues were not even mentioned. Having the art of a incestuous child rapist over your front door… Its almost as though the BBC were proud of having an incestuous child rapist’s artwork in the most prominent place on their headquarters…
The impression given was that any issues were trumped by the fact the artist is great, others display art by him and a naked little boy is supposed to be a metaphor for brodcasting, so we are going to leave the statue there… End of conversation.
Why was there no deep soul searching by the BBC into the statue, issues, the individual and the artwork… ?
This blog post by 5ocietyx from the time The Tempest: Prospero, Ariel, Gill and the BBC…and Anonymous [13] offers the following opinions, far better than I could, but I have slightly adapted.
“Despite everything that has happened since the BBC’s number one asset, Jimmy Savile, was exposed as Britain’s most notorious paedophile the corporation remains unrepentant of its use of child abusers to host children’s television programmes and its use of paedophiles to decorate its flagship building.

I wonder how they chose the broadcast frequencies for their programming. I wonder if it is positioned on a nexus of the earths magnetic grid? Why has the magician got a large sphere of stone at his feet?

January 2022 Defacing of Statue Prospero and Ariel
Following the recent defacing protest of the statue, the BBC’s justifications of the statue are
“The statue at the front of old Broadcasting House is a representation of Prospero and Ariel from Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Prospero is shown sending Ariel out into the world. When the statue was commissioned, Ariel – as the spirit of the air – was seen as an appropriate symbol for the new dawn of broadcasting.” [40]
‘The BBC doesn’t condone the views or actions of Eric Gill. Clearly there are debates about whether you can separate the work of an artist from the art itself. We think the right thing to do is for people to have those discussions. We don’t think the right approach is to damage the artwork itself.’ [40]
They want people to have discussions about the statue, but when people have tried to have those discussions previously, after Savile, the BBC effectively shut them down by refusing to discuss them, or even address the points brought forward.
The BBC have multiple platforms radio, podcasts, websites, and programmes, and yet they only very rarely had anything even approaching those discussions.
Back in 1992 when the Barbican was holding a retrospective exhibition of Gill, radio art programme BBC Night Waves possibly with presenter Tony Planer had essentially a 20 min eulogy for Gill with promoter Judith Collins, and Times art critic Richard Cork.
Collins suggested that what is perceived as Gill’s sacred and profane was in fact all one, as Gill thought bodies were the Temple of God, and thus it seemed the seedy side of Gill did not need to be discussed. BBC Night Waves – Eric Gill [18]
In 2007 Finlo Rohrer made a brief but fair stab at the Gill issues in the BBC News Magazine Can the art of a paedophile be celebrated? [36] and Finlo Rohrer again in 2015 mused on some of the broader issues of when statue should be removed. When is it right to remove a statue? [37]

Art programmes will tend to favour the art, but nothing indicates BBC official thinking or policy.
A BBC culture editor Katie Razzall, managed a few short paragraphs describing her walk past the event, and its assault on beauty, but its superficial at best and do not attempt to answer any questions that need answering.
For the BBC’s own news article the BBC officially refused to comment!! It is particularly disingenuous and hypocritical for the BBC to now say people should have those discussions.

Besides the cultural angle, the assault on beauty, the other angle the BBC takes with alacrity is fabricating and sustaining a conspiracy narrative. Shayan is one of the lowly operatives they use for this. He works for the anti Disinformation Unit or possibly more accurately the Aunty Disinformation unit.
In the Mail, Shayan Sardarizadeh was quoted “Gill’s statue had been an obsession for British QAnon, “save our children” “Satanic ritual abuse” and other conspiracy groups for a very long time”
As I have already shown, with references, it is indisputably child abuse survivors groups that have been campaigning for a very long time for the Gill’s artwork to be moved. For over 20 years at least.
Why should Shayan want to twist this to give the wrong impression? Why would Shayan want to distribute disinformation or propaganda from the BBC that the survivors groups who had real and justified concerns were some sort of conspiracy group?
Why Shayan?
“Conspiracy group” but especially the term “conspiracy theorist” are often used by this BBC Disinformation Unit. Both are perjorative phrases that delegitimise a person as some kind of nutcase so that their arguments do not have to be addressed. In reality of course, most are independent minded people who do far more research into the truth than a paid shill for corporate media.
“Conspiracy theory” as a perjorative term was popularised by the CIA to conceal their involvement in the Kennedy assassination by casting a “mad” label towards those getting close to the truth. The parallel now is that the BBC are choosing to do this to child abuse survivors.
Why do the BBC want to try to discredit child abuse survivors? Why not make a case based on the facts instead of by innuendo, slur and propaganda. Why try and bully from a huge asymettry of power advantage?
If your only tool is a hammer, every problem seems like a nail. One trick pony Shayan appears to try to lever everyone and everything into his paid obsession of conspiracies. Why?
In about 2011 I knew nothing about child abuse. I started off trying to ascertain if child abuse happened and if it was on the scale necessary for the great amount of people disclosing it on social media groups. I did this at first by FOI requests to official sources – government, local authorities and police for reports kept hidden from the public.
Probably about 50 reports have been released from these requests. They confirmed from official sources that there was indeed massive child sexual abuse that cannot be denied by anyone. The fact that these reports showed widespread child abuse and still in many cases were damage limitation exercises for the authorities is also clear.
There are also now thousands upon thousands of personal testimonies, some of which I have had the honour to be trusted with telling. More and more are coming forward, and they do so in the vast majority of cases so that no child has to suffer like they did.
Shayan apparently chooses not to write the simple truth, that survivors and survivors groups object to a child rapists artwork, with very good and substantial reasons, including that they can be physically and mentally triggered by such objects, due to their trauma.
Shayan looks pathetic, stupid and manipulative to those who know the truth. It is shameful that perceptions of people who do not know the truth, who look to the BBC to tell them the truth, are being manipulated. Instead of the truth, they get the impression from what he writes that somehow people campaigning against child sexual abuse are “conspiracy groups”.
He targets those that campaign against abuse, and bandies about a few phrases like “save our children” “satanic ritual abuse” which appear to be thinly disguised attempts to discredit campaigners against child abuse.
Bizarrely the other thing that Shayan deems worthy of mention in his 20 words of wisdom to comment on the situation in a BBC article is that Gill died in 1940. [7]
Does the fact that an artist died in 1940 have any bearing on or in any way diminish any arguments against the statue, or any repeated trauma that survivors feel on seeing a naked child in the power of an elder man.
Is the fact Gill died in 1940 really worth 4 of his very limited 20 words that he writes as his contribution to an article on an attack on a statue, and the other 16 trying to associate it with a boogeyman conspiracy?
What Shayan does is wrong, unnecessary, it twists the truth, it’s propaganda, but he’s just a lowly surf trying to impress his masters at the BBC aunty disinformation unit.

Shayan goes further and links those “groups” to his and other BBC disinformation churnalists favourite boogeyman “QAnon”. He never explains to his largely unknowing audience the true situation. He never defines QAnon. He never says what QAnon is. Shayan, the BBC and other mainstream media have developed “QAnon” over time as term of abuse, alongside “conspiracy theory”.
Q was probably the biggest psychological operation and biggest release of intelligence of all time, albeit mixed with disinformation. “QAnon”, if anyone chose that term, I would define as a person who tried to interpret that information, mixed also with agent provocateur “QAnons” seeking to discredit the true information.
Thus it is easy for anyone who so wishes (ie the legacy media) to take one extreme interpretation by someone that they deem to be QAnon and then ridicule that interpretation. Its the ultimate “go to” smear. Repeat ad infinitum and that is how you propagandise and develop your boogeyman. That is what the BBC have done.
What the BBC disinformation people like Shayan never do is take you to the primary source, show you what Q said and discuss that.
Why? Why Shayan?
Why do they never inform you of the source material and let you judge for yourself? Why do they go to secondary source interpretations and ridicule those rather than discuss the primary source material?
Why was the policy of the whole of the mainstream /legacy media to totally ignore Q for so many months?
It got harder and harder to ignore Q and the mainstream /legacy media just looked stupid. It was a deliberate and apparently coordinated policy for all legacy media to ignore Q.

Another lowly surf trying to scrabble up the ladder is Marianna Spring of the BBC Disinformation mafia.
Shayan and Marianna lurk in various groups under false pretences, not aligned with the common aim of the group they join. They spy on the group and their purpose is to “expose” that group as being “conspiracy theorists” or “conspiracy groups”.

Marianna has made a name for herself by ignoring proven disinformation eg a matron Laura Duffel, was proven to be lying on the BBC, that her ward in Kings Cross Hospital, London was full of children with covid. She didn’t want to know, neither did her boss. [61]
Marianna spreads her own disinformation, eg continually underestimating crowd numbers at protests against covid restrictions, it appears in an attempt to diminish their significance.

She also plays it after people disagree with her precisely due to the disinformation she has just spread. Whilst I dont condone abuse, she has a very low bar for deciding what is abuse. Its almost as though she does it to deflect away from her disinfo by playing the victim. The is a repeating pattern disinfo, play victim, disinfo, play victim.
I caught her complaining that she is often targeted by false claims that focus on her age and gender. The only example she gave did not mention her age or gender but her lack of qualifications.
You only had to give one example Marianna and you managed to mess that up and give disinformation.

So when she calls you a conspiracy theorist she means that you deliberately seek to cause harm to people… She deliberately manipulates definitions to try adn make others appear bad.
This is the kind of people that claim to report on disinformation.

Statues are lightning rods, symbols of the prevailing values of the society. When those values are not shared a debate needs to be started. [37]
Finally lets see who the person was and why he did it. The BBC, despite the fact that the protest was on their doorstep do not seem to have bothered to film it, interview the man or report on why he was driven to do what he was doing. Par for the course.

Family Law does fail children and dads and mums, it fails families. Family Courts have long been a source of injustice for mothers and fathers. David Chick became frustrated at the legal system as he tried to enforce a court order allowing him to visit his daughter for two hours every week.
It is a massively flawed system. Family Courts can take children away from one parent, the other or both on the balance of probabilities decided by one judge, and not a criminal “beyond all reasonable doubt” standard of proof.
The wronged parent or parents cannot even talk about their case. They are gagged in case the child is identified.
That is not taking into account the incompetence and corruption of some social workers, or medical professionals and justice system or the fact that the family court system appears to be used deliberately, systematically to traffick children to paedosadists.
Even when a father’s abuse was proven in court, mothers who had alleged that abuse still lost custody in 13 % of the cases. Why? It is not just victims asking questions about the Family Court but nothing seems to improve…

Family Court injustices drive people like Martin Chick into direct action.
The BBC just makes clowns out of themselves by pretending that anyone protesting child rapists artwork must be a conspiracy theorist for a BBC chosen boogeyman group. These people have longstanding justified grievances due to the system having failed them. Why don’t the BBC investigate the injustices endemic in the Family Court sytem? Even when the BBC cover a protest they rarely if ever cover the issues in any depth, they just want a spiderman picture and a court report.
A wronged individual, having little way but direct action to draw attention for his cause and the injustice of the whole system then gets failed on an even bigger scale. Instead of looking at the injustice and trying to correct the faults to make a better system, the component parts of the system then attack the person questioning the system.
In this 2004 crane protest for example, the police took it upon themselves to stop all work on a £45m office block and surrounding streets were sealed off. Large parts of the City and East London were gridlocked with frequent 10-mile traffic jams. The protest went on for at least 5 days.
However the closures were all unnecessary. The police did this as a bargaining tool as David Chick did not want any closures. The Police also believed that they might not get a conviction if they opened the roads.
Then David Chick was taken to trial for 9 days, in which fortunately he was found not guilty presumably by a jury, which is one strength of the system, which is of course in the process of being weakened.
People learn through these experiences. They learn which parts of the system – which people, which authorities, which media can or cannot be trusted.
Were the individuals in the Police and Court system investigated and a public report done to ensure lessons were learned, or the guilty men charged? Of course not. Corruption is rife.

I did not delve into the various interpretations of Areil and Prospero, due to time limitations and it is not presently within my sphere of knowledge. However thre is an interesting comment on this post As a note, the character of Ariel is a spirit in The Tempest – it’s never suggested he is a child. In interests of brevity I won’t go into the arguments for removing the statue now, I will just leave a few comments I came across whilst writing the article which touch on the issue.

I find it hard to countenance the idea that a piece of art is worth more in significance than the actions of the man who created it.
Ultimately, there are enough excellent artists out there whose work could replace Gill’s. Certainly on places as prominent as the BBC’s Broadcasting House, Westminster Cathedral and the European headquarters of the United Nations.
Therefore, it seems that Eric Gill through his own fault and/or the fault of his spiritual advisers, did not change his sexual paranoia to become a good Catholic. Instead, his vices and morbid tendencies were “blessed” by at least one priest and Gill started to distort Catholic doctrine to fit his debauchery.

Thank you for this massively informative piece – so much to digest. Gill was a real monster, but if it hadn’t been for McCarthy’s biography, we would still, probably not know anything about his personal life. As a note, the character of Ariel is a spirit in The Tempest – it’s never suggested he is a child. As far as I’m aware, no production has ever portrayed him as a child. Gill evidently just used a classic literary pairing to manifest his own predilections: a man restraining a naked boy. It would be easy for the BBC to just take the statue down, but they won’t. I wonder why. And I knew nothing about Reith’s penchants. Thanks again for your research and writing. It’s important.

Cathy Fox. be extra careful please. While reading comments on a blog I came across info of 14 Truthers have died under suspicious circumstances in the past few months in the USA. The blog I was reading was Girl On Fire. Her name was Tracy and in the comments of her last blog we were informed that she died a few days ago. A reader posted about the 14 dead, Tracy now being the 15th. This reader would not give out the names of the other 14. I do not know if it is true or not but please be careful. We know that the crimes of these evil ones are in every country around the world. I wanted to give you a heads up if it was true.

The trouble is that if everyone has such regard for their own safety then we never say anything in case we upset people who bully us or kill us into silence. Nothing gets exposed, everyone is silent. Everyone needs to speak out, then they cannot kill us all. Yes they might get a few of us, but the rest can live in peace and safety. If we are all quiet, then we live in fear and war.
But its more urgent than a general “speak out ” message, soon if we do not speak out, we wont have the chance.
I cant help and encourage survivors to speak out, if i keep quiet. There are people that are taking much more risks than me.
The more that speak out, the safer for us all…
The numbers dying from v shots are huge compared to any whistleblowers they are killing. We have to remember also all the ones they have killed in experiments, sacrifices etc and all the children they continue to use and torture for their distorted Luciferian ideology and dogma.
Speak out speak out wherever you are, but also pick your battles wisely.

I agree with you. I just wanted you to know what seems to be happening in the USA. I think everyone that has information that speaks out is a hero. I am sure that you have taken many precautions years ago due to the evil and their ways but just gave you a heads up anyway. Bless you for what you do.
